Phoenix, AZ (September 17, 2014) – Carter Law Group is pleased to announce that Mackenzie Woods has joined the firm as an attorney.  Mackenzie’s practice is focused in the areas of charter school formation and compliance, charter management organization structuring and tax regulation, corporate law, as well as education law and policy.

“Mackenzie is a terrific addition to our team.  He brings a unique skill set and knowledge base that will assist us in supporting a variety of education, charter school, and nonprofit clients.” said Ellis Carter who founded Carter Law Group in 2010.

As a former eighth grade science teacher with Teach For America, Mackenzie has experienced first-hand many of the challenges that schools face.  It was his experience in the classroom that inspired him to become an attorney for school and nonprofit leaders.  During his last semester in law school, Mackenzie worked for the Arizona State Board for Charter Schools.

“I am excited to combine my interest in the law and education in a way that will help charter schools and other nonprofit organizations achieve their goals.” said Mackenzie.  “Working with Carter Law Group as an associate is a great platform to support the nonprofit and education sector in Arizona and throughout the United States.”

Carter Law Group assists a broad range of exempt and non-exempt mission oriented companies including charter and private schools, educational organizations, grant-making foundations, hospitals, behavioral health, incubators and economic development efforts, trade associations, and museums locally, nationally, and internationally.

Mackenzie earned his J.D. from the ASU Sandra Day O’Connor College of Law and his B.A. summa cum laude from the University of New Mexico.  He is a founding board member of the Western School of Science and Technology (a Challenge Foundation Academy), and a board member of the Young Nonprofit Professionals Network of Phoenix.  He has served in several education leadership and policy fellowships including Building Excellent Schools, the Arizona Charter Schools Association’s New Schools for Phoenix Fellowship, and the Leadership for Educational Equity’s Policy and Advocacy Fellowship.
